简 介
张婉婷“移民三部曲”之一，时间背景为中国大陆改革开放初期。
猴子（洪金宝）文革期间一声不吭离别家乡汕头台山偷渡赴美，立誓再也不回中国。16年来，他凭着中国人特有的小聪明和吃苦耐劳兢兢业业地做着的士司机，可是攒下的积蓄却是有限，不过身体倒是发福不少。熬不住思乡之苦下决心回乡时，他向伙伴借下八两金（金手表、金项链），又买大大小小物件若干好“衣锦还乡”。归家途中遭遇小波折，他借录“遗声”表达对父母、小妹的愧疚。
到家猴子发现父母陪小妹去了乡下偷生政策不许的第二胎，在今成妹夫的儿时玩伴的陪同下，他见到童年时的拌嘴表妹乌嘴婆（张艾嘉），后者像其时的许多广东人一样想去香港或美国，不过比他们幸运的是，她已拿到赴美的“签证”——未来的husband在纽约唐人街开有一家餐馆，来年春天会接她赴美，不久猴子与携弟弟的乌嘴婆一起回到乡下。与父母、小妹话过相思之苦，猴子像许多多年不曾归乡的归乡客一样，被中国特有的世故人情害得哑巴吃黄连。
猴子与乌嘴婆相处初期，讲话不忘夹带半生不熟的英文单词的乌嘴婆沉浸在对美国生活的浪漫幻想中，猴子不时泼去冷水，随着接触的深入，两人慢慢生出爱情，乌嘴婆渐渐不再提她的美国梦，但她的未来之路早已铺好，而猴子也在父母的安排下开始了相亲之旅。
