　　影片根据美国作家菲利普·罗斯2009年的同名作品改编，帕西诺扮演Simon Axler，一位曾经是传奇，如今已过气的莎士比亚悲剧演员，他的事业江河日下，难以寻回对表演和生活的热情，精神状态也日益堪忧。
　　他叫经纪人帮他找个写回忆录的活，因为“过气演员都干这个”。出演《李尔王》时，他因为“分不清场景究竟是戏剧还是现实”而从舞台上跌了下来。在医院的急救担架上，他努力尝试一声“完美的疼痛呻吟”。还询问“自杀后能否领回财产”。
　　正在此时，他与朋友的女儿，只有他一半大的 Pegeen（葛韦格），在康涅狄格州的一座疗养中心里相遇，展开了一场老少热恋。Pegeen 像个普通追星族一样崇拜他，两人的关系急速升温。可随着他们日益接近，Pegeen 家人提出强烈反对，Axler 也发现自己有些跟不上这位小女友的青春活力。
