《透纳先生》讲述了英国画家约翰·透纳充满创作激情的一生，他曾经因创作手法过于先锋而备受诋毁，然而透纳视绘画创作为生命，一生佳作累累，即使临死前都挣扎着爬起床临摹一具女尸。他在晚年尤其自19世纪40年代起即致力于绘画形式与色彩的探索，用食材、口水等不可思议的颜料作画，引来一片争议之声，被视为英国最伟大的画家之一，也是出了名的艺术怪人。

.影片上映后激发了英国人对透纳的更大兴趣。2014年底，特纳的《Rome, From Mount Aventine》在苏富比拍出了3030万英镑的价格，这是所有英国20世纪前画家作品拍卖的最高价。
.影片的开篇场景是设计在荷兰发生的，但实际拍摄地为英国索Suffolk的Herringfleet Mill，那是一处著名的有着风车的经典。片中出现的两位妇女当时说着荷兰语。.
.收到邀请出演透纳之后，蒂莫西·斯波花了两年时间准备，以便在银幕上看起来像个真正的画家。
.影片中出现的1830年罗伯特·史蒂芬森设计的火车头是从曼切斯特科工博物馆借来的复制品。剧组让它在北威尔士的一段旧铁轨上运行，并在太阳落山时拍下了片中的那一幕。
.2014年底索尼电影公司内部网络遭到黑客袭击，本片的片源被非法流露到了网络上，当时距离该片北美上映还有3个星期的时间。
