　　伦敦大学的教授斯嘉丽（佩蒂塔·维克斯 Perdita Weeks 饰），年纪轻轻便拥有考古学、符号学等专业学位，更掌握四国语言。她的父亲曾经致力于点金石的探索研究，可悲的是最后死于非命。继承了父亲遗志的斯嘉丽在新近一次冒险中，从伊朗一座即将被炸毁的墓穴里找到了传说中的罗塞秘钥，这个关键发现可以帮她找到点金石的蛛丝马迹。为了实现这个目标，她请来班吉（艾德文·霍德吉 Edwin Hodge 饰）担任摄影记录工作，还拜托曾经与之一同出生入死的乔治（本·费德曼 Ben Feldman 饰）担任翻译。

       这部电影运用了恐怖片当下非常流行的伪纪录片的拍摄手法。故事将人们的视线带到巴黎地下绵延两百英里的遗骸迷宫，那里的墙壁是由600万具尸体的骨头堆砌而成的。导演约翰-埃里克-道达尔和编剧德鲁-多德尔本来想创作一个寻找神秘的历史遗产的故事，但当他们随着故事深入地下墓穴，发展人物的时候，发现不自然的又跟随人物回到了他们的过去。他们面临的最大恶魔是他们的心魔。于是，为了让人物更加可信，他们让人物面对真实的自己。电影有一个炼金术的主题，其中斯嘉丽-玛露对炼金术有着深刻的理解。她的父亲是世界上最杰出的炼金术师，有着杰出的理论，认为这可以净化人类的灵魂。斯嘉丽掌握的知识将在影片中起决定性的作用。
       影片是在一个真实的墓穴中拍摄的，他们并不想为了省钱在罗马尼亚搭一个景或者随便找个地方，他们追求真实感。道达尔等人是第一个被允许进入墓穴禁地拍摄的摄制组，同时他们也拿到了公共墓穴地下部分的拍摄许可（他们也是第一个来到这里取景的剧组）。当然，他们必须保证不能损坏墙壁或者做什么傻事。为了获得许可，摄制组吃了不少苦头，因为这两个场景在完全不同的两个地理位置，直到他们开拍的前一晚才拿到了授权书。道达尔说：“在法国，这是一个很大的历史古迹。虽然法国是个盛产电影的国家，但他们出产的恐怖片并不多，他们有些抵触这个。”法国人远没有西班牙人对恐怖片的热情高，所以当道达尔一行人提出这个请求的时候，当地人觉得很奇怪。如果他们只是在那里创作纯粹的艺术作品，当地人会更容易接受，但当他们得知是拍电影时多少有点不情愿。好在电影的法国制片方有很好的沟通能力，帮他们获得了最后的通行证。
       由于在昏暗的地下拍摄受到诸多限制，道达尔自然地就像把影片拍摄成纪实风格的作品。“那里过于窄小，没法通电也没有浴室。只能塞下小摄像机和人。”现场的照明是靠演员在影片里戴的头灯，这帮他们节省了不少成本，也营造了逼真的纪实效果。
